變壓器絕緣油的絕緣強度高，在電氣設備中主要作為絕緣介質使用，又因其比熱較大，故也可以用來冷卻介質，變壓油在斷路器和變壓器中不僅作為熄弧之介質亦是發起冷卻作用的功臣。
在高壓電纜中，變壓器油具有填充、浸漬的作用，以排除電纜內部的氣體，提升電氣強度。在油浸式變壓器中，變壓器油具填充、浸潰、絕緣的特性，用來提高電容量和絕緣強度。
